The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art to Host
An Art Therapy Symposium
The Creative/Expressive Arts Therapies in Pinellas County
The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art will host The Creative/Expressive Arts Therapies in Pinellas County, an art therapy symposium, to be held on Saturday, April, 12, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Museum.
The cost is $15 for students and Museum members and $20 for the general public; deadline for registration is April 4, 2008.
The event will begin in the Museum Auditorium and will include a keynote address, professional presentations, and a panel discussion. Boxed lunches and beverages will be provided and are included in the admission price.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Myra F. Levick, a distinguished psychologist, art psychotherapist, and author, will present Art, Body, Mind and Health: Developing and Utilizing Successful Expressive Arts Therapies Programs. Dr. Levick coordinated the first graduate art therapy program leading to a Master’s degree in 1967 at Hahnemann University, now Drexel University, and she continues to contribute to the research and practice of art therapies.
Lin Carte, artist, art psychotherapist, and leader of the Museum’s youth art therapy program, ArtHaven, will present Signs of Life, Signs of Hope: The Reflection of the Visual Arts Therapies for Teenagers at-Risk.
Grace-Anne Alfiero, executive director and Jenny Baxley Lee, assistant director, Creative Clay, Inc., will lead Making the Arts Accessible for All, a didactic and interactive program.
Julie Rowe, director of education, American Stage Theatre Company, will present Changing Lives Through Theatre, an outreach program serving Hospice of the Florida Suncoast patients, hearing-impaired children, and incarcerated teens.
Steve Turner, drum circle facilitator, Giving Tree Music, will perform Community Drum Circles for Human Empowerment, an interactive and cohesive musical program.
The community is invited to participate in this hands-on opportunity designed to facilitate the act of creating for therapeutic healing. Anyone interested in the expressive arts – art therapy, dance/movement therapy, drama therapy, music therapy – is encouraged to attend.
